Forest cover maps developed in framework of the Proba-V-TerraNorte project

The Proba-V-TerraNorte project carried out with support of the Belgian Federal Science Policy Office (BELSPO) in framework of the preparatory programme for the launch of the new Earth observation satellite system Proba-V which is developing as a successor of the SPOT-Vegetation satellite system.

The main objective of the Proba-V-TerraNorte research project was to evaluate the impact of the enhanced spatial resolution of future PROBA-V sensor (1/3 km in VNIR channels and 2/3 кm in SWIR channel at swath edge) versus VEGETATION sensor (1.15 km) for forest cover mapping accuracy over large region with geographical focus on Russia. The Proba-V-TerraNorte research project used MODIS imagery (at about 230m & 460m resolution) to generate proxy imagery for PROBA-V planned mission, and VEGETATION imagery to be used as comparison dataset.

The forest cover maps developed in framework of the Proba-V-TerraNorte project are available from the links below:

Proba-V/MOD345 – the forest cover of Russia with 345m spatial resolution, developed using MODIS data for year 2010 (map in GIS format, poster)

VGT1035 – the forest cover of Russia with 1035m spatial resolution, developed using SPOT-Vegetation data acquired during period of years 2001-2010 (map in GIS format, poster)

MOD1035   – forest cover of Russia with 1035m spatial resolution, developed using MODIS data for year 2010 (map in GIS format, poster)
